Bath Combination U20s 24 – 17 Bristol Combination U20s

bob_6980_100Following a very close encounter against Bristol earlier this season which saw Bristol pip Bath by a single point, the scene was set for an exciting return which was played at the Rec in Bath on Wednesday evening.

The Bath Combination team, made up of promising players from Clubs including Avon, Avonvale, Combe Down, Corsham, Keynsham, Midsummer Norton, Old Sulians, Oldfield, Walcot and Westbury, took part in this fiercely competitive game.

The Bath Combination side put together some promising moves, which resulted in the first Try being scored by Stephen Bath after breaking through a resilient Bristol back line.  Bristol responded with a well-worked try, which saw the teams draw level 10 – 10 at the break.

bob_6974_150In the second half Bath turned up the pressure, forcing Bristol to concede 2 penalties, which were converted by the Bath kickers Rob Fitch and Matt Fairless.  Bath ran in their second Try of the game scored by Flanker, Freddie Scobey, following a quickly tap penalty by scrum half Sam Prentice allowing Scobey to power his way through several would be tacklers and race to the line.

The Bristol team, who remained resilient and competitive throughout, then produced the move of the game to score a well worked Try which was converted, bringing the points tally to 24 – 17 in favour of Bath.  This created a very tense final 5 minutes in which Bath defended very well up to the final whistle.

The Bath Combination Captain, Tom Knight, commented “I was very impressed by the effort put in by all the players in the Bath squad who worked hard all season, enabling us to triumph over a very well organised and competitive Bristol team”.

Bath Combination Rugby would like to thank all the Local Clubs for supporting this season Under 20’s Squad including the Team Coaches Simon Chambers, Matt Andrews, Kevin Woodland, Chris Hobbs and Steve Withy along with Admin support from Robert Knight and our physio team of Tim Bunting and Lin Rosevear. Also a big thank you to Bath Rugby and the Charity Commission for allowing us to use the Recreation facilities at reduced rates.

Team Manager Martin Lynch stated, “What a fantastic result for all the players and coaches, we have been working extremely hard this season to forge a strong rugby unit and all the Teams efforts paid off with a well deserved win. The Under 20’s Bath Combination Squad is really starting to take shape and now we are in our third season of representative local club rugby for this age group the reputation and quality of our team is such that we are now in discussions with the County representatives sides to arrange early season matches as a prelude to the County trials.

We are also looking to form with our Bristol and Gloucester City Rugby counterparts a three way Combination Cup Tournament at this age group playing matches both home and away next season. We will be looking for a local sponsor to help support this new local grass routes rugby initiative and we are also hoping that we can fix dates into the Premiership Clubs fixture diaries to allow us to play our matches for this Tournament mid week at all of the Local City Premiership Grounds, this can only help to forge closer rugby links from the amateur to professional game”.

The Combination are also aiming to kick off next season with an Under 17’s team structured in exactly the same way as the 20’s squad and we already have had commitment from several local Club Rugby Coaches to run this age group - So watch this space.

For more information on this rugby initiative and for all local rugby club contacts as well as details for this years Highly successful Bath Combination Summer Rugby Camps which kick off on the Monday 27th of July at the Stothert & Pitt RFC Ground please go to http://www.bathcombinationrugby.co.uk/.
